Community Cycles Volunteer Opportunities (Boulder, CO)

Boulder's Community Cycles has a great Build-a-Bike program for young people that my son attended, it a a great community resource.
Wouldn't this be a great org to support with your volunteer time (and, if you need the experience, it would give you something fun to talk about on your resume)!

Cheers,
Connie

Happy New Year everyone,
Brett Schager
In case you'd forgotten how magical volunteering at Community Cycles is, we are reminding you that it's as magical as Harry Potter or getting money after you do your taxes. We have lots of plans for volunteers in the new year and would like to share some of our hopes, joys and dreams with you.

Below are a number of different ways you can become involved in Community Cycles, either through one-time events like our Kids Holiday Bike Give-Away or regular volunteering in our community bike shop. We hope to get many more people on bikes in 2012 and need your help to do so.

Below are upcoming volunteer opportunities for 2012, facilitator trainings, workshops, and events we'd like to participate in. Most events will have more information as they get closer, but I have given known dates and times so you can start planning now.

We encourage you all to become Community Cycles members and help us reach our goal of doubling our membership this year. Your membership helps us keep cycling strong in Boulder.

These are certainly not all of the events happening this year, and all will have more information as they come up, but we hope that you resolve to volunteer more in 2012 and help keep our programs afloat. Thanks for all your support.

Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities:

BECOME A FACILITATOR

We always need more high-level volunteers, called facilitators. They help us run our programs, particularly activities going on in our main shop. The best way to get started as a facilitator is to come to trainings. Stay involved and voice your opinions about the organization by coming to our monthly facilitator meetings, which will take place the fourth Wednesday of every month at 6 p.m. (The next one is Feb. 22).

If you would like to volunteer, we require a commitment schedule, ideally one 3-hour shift per week. To learn more, please visit our volunteer page.

INTERNS WANTED

Volunteer Coordinator Assistant

This person will work with Community Cycles' Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator to recruit, schedule, train and engage volunteers. This includes tracking volunteers in our database, and communicating with new and existing volunteers on a regular basis. Hours are flexible and may require attendance at activities and events.

Outreach Coordinator Assistant

This person will work with Community Cycles' Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator to plan and staff events, service projects, and other activities. Hours are flexible and may require attendance at activities and events hosted.

Membership Program Assistant

This person will be based out of Community Cycles' main shop. The intern will help Community Cycles staff with the membership program, including developing and increasing our membership base. The intern will also perform office duties associated with the membership program, such as phone calls, mailings, tabling and maintenance of a computer database.

Graphic Designer

This person will work with the Community Cycles staff to design posters, flyers, leaflets, handouts and other marketing media. It will involve proofing documents for style, designing promotional materials and updating existing promotional materials. Most work can be done from home and hours can be flexible, but most projects will have deadlines.

Marketing Intern

This person will work with Community Cycles staff and volunteers to assist with marketing for the organization. Community Cycles hosts over a dozen programs and is also a retail shop with sales, service and memberships. The intern will assist with promoting advocacy items, our retail shop, our programs and our membership base.

Web Development

This position involves design and development help with our website. Our executive director currently does all our webmaster work, so we are seeking some skilled people to assist us, even just critiquing and giving feedback. Experience with Joomla! and PHP/MySQL is ideal. We are interested in short- or long-term help with our website. Feel free to lend a hand if you are able.

If you are interested in becoming a Community Cycles intern, email a resume to director@communitycycles.org

VOLUNTEER HANDBOOK

I have been working on this for some time and never had a means to distribute it. This includes our policies and procedures, as well as descriptions of volunteer roles. I will update this as new information comes in, and any policies are subject to change at any time and are subject to review by our board of directors. I hope you find this helpful. It is a Google Document that can be accessed here.

Upcoming Events

ROLLING BIKE CLINICS

We will host another annual rolling bike clinic tour to a number of low-income and bike-friendly neighborhoods around Boulder. We will hold at least two trainings for those interested in participating in multiple rolling bike clinics over the summer.

We are hosting them on the following dates:
  • Saturday, May 5 – San Juan del Centro
  • Saturday, May 12 – Mapleton Mobile Home Park
  • Saturday, May 19 – Orchard Grove Mobile Home Park
  • Saturday, May 26 – Kalmia (BHP)
  • Sunday, June 3 – Broadway East (BHP)
  • Sunday, June 10 – Goss Grove
  • Sunday June 17 – San Lazaro
  • Saturday, July 14 – Meadows Trailer Park
  • Saturday, July 21 – Madison Public Housing
Tentative training dates:
  • Saturday, April 28 – RBC Training
  • Saturday, June 2 – RBC Training
  • Saturday, July 7 – RBC Training

B-360

We will be helping to mark off the course for the B-360 again this year and need volunteers to spray-paint (calling all closet graffiti artists) along the route and hang signs close to event day.

BOLDER BOULDER

For those of you who love running (although biking is by far superior), it would be great to get a group of CC supporters to wear CC T-shirts as they participate in this event. Events like this are great in groups!

EARTH MONTH/WEEK/DAY

We will be hosting or participating in a variety of events around Earth Day. Come help us table at environmentally friendly events.

WALK AND BIKE MONTH - JUNE

We will have many events in June for Walk and Bike Month and many opportunities to volunteer, including doing outreach at the Farmer's Market, working at a Bike to Work Day breakfast station, and doing safety and education events.

BOULDER JEWISH FESTIVAL – VALET BIKE PARKING – JUNE 10

We would like to host valet bike parking at the Boulder Jewish Festival again. We will need tablers and people to help with the bike valet. We had a low turnout last year and need people to help make it more prominent this year.

NEW BELGIUM CLIPS OF FAITH BEER BICYCLE FILM FESTIVAL – JUNE 29TH

Last year Community Cycles was the beneficiary of this event and over 1,200 people attended. We need over 40 volunteers to serve beer, park bikes and supervise beer games. We will need a few lead volunteers for each volunteer position to attend a planning meeting and oversee volunteers at the event. Hurry – these volunteer slots go fast!

PARENTING PLACE 4TH OF JULY KIDS PARADE

On the 4th of July, Parenting Place hosts a kids' bike parade downtown. Last year we offered bike safety checks and tabled. We would like to do so again this year and really spread the word about being there to check kids' bikes for safety.

NAROPA AND CU VOLUNTEER FAIRS

We missed the CU Volunteer fair last year, which is quite a pity. We want to have a strong presence there with excited tablers to talk about their great experiences with Community Cycles and explain how rewarding it is to volunteer with us (with a straight face!). A large portion of Boulder is made up of students, and some are not working and have free time to volunteer and learn more about cycling at the same time. Let's recruit some volunteers! We will also be tabling at the Naropa Volunteer fair.

PRIDEFEST

We'd like to have a booth at Pridefest this year to support diversity.

VELOSWAP

We'll be at VeloSwap again this year in late October. We'll need a few people to help us table, and sell bikes and parts. Volunteers should have a strong background buying/selling parts and pricing them.

7th ANNUAL KIDS HOLIDAY BIKE GIVEAWAY

We will host our 7th giveaway in December (tentatively Saturday, Dec. 16 this year) and plan to give away about 300 bikes. To step up our game this year, we would like to begin refurbishing kids' bikes earlier and have a place to store them, reach out to businesses to give matching donations, and advertise to more communities to give away more bikes.
