Democratization of Embedded System Design

TIME: 2:00 PM ET / 11:00 AM PT / 18:00 UTC/GMT (Duration: 1 hour)

DESCRIPTION: Many design teams are abandoning larger specialized teams for smaller groups focused on translating domain expertise into realized innovation.

We live in a world of rapid technology democratization. In the space of a few decades, computers have transitioned from expensive research devices accessible to a select few – to ubiquitous personal assistants. GPS has progressed from a military technology to a component in nearly every mobile electronic device – from a way to position missiles to a method for finding nearby coffee shops. This same democratization is occurring in embedded system design. Many leading design teams are recognizing the importance of moving domain experts to the forefront of the design process and abandoning larger specialized groups for smaller, nimbler teams focused on translating domain expertise into realized innovation. By adopting a platform-based approach, embedded system designers are able to focus on algorithm design, prototyping, and rapid deployment rather than the artificial complexity of the hardware and software pieces. A "long tail" of specialized embedded systems are now being implemented, which is made possible by the combination of domain experts and integrated hardware and software platforms. These are much lower in volume per system than cost-optimized mass produced embedded systems, but they make up a significant portion of the embedded market.

PRESENTER: Ahmed Mahmoud, Senior Group Manager- Embedded Systems Marketing, National Instruments
Ahmed Mahmoud strives to effectively communicate and educate others on the business value of the National Instruments embedded control and monitoring technology platform and Graphical System Design. Ahmed joined National Instruments in 1997 and holds a bachelor's degree in computer science and automatic control from Alexandria University, a master of science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master of business administration from San Jose State University.

MODERATOR: Dexter Johnson
Sr. Analyst at Cientifica, a business intelligence company for emerging technologies
