Re: Protect yourself from COVID-19 and flu this fall and winter. Everything you need to know about new flu shots and the updated 2025-26 COVID-19 vaccine.

"When will the newest vaccines be available?

Some large pharmacies already have the new versions of the COVID-19 and flu vaccines in stock. Others will be getting them in the coming days. Actions from federal officials have not stopped vaccine manufacturers from shipping vaccines, Barron said. So, reaching out to your doctor in the next month or two should be good timing for getting your vaccines if you're able to do so.

"

"

The new 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccines will fight the newest COVID-19 variants.

Vaccine makers also update flu shots every year to protect people from the flu strains that are most likely to surface this fall and winter.

The opportunity to protect yourself from the newest respiratory virus variants is one of many reasons you'll want to get both your COVID-19 and flu vaccines this fall if you're able to get them."

Your Backpack Is Too Heavy, first aid, thanks to backpacker

"A guide-worthy first aid kit

I encourage people to carry some supplies, but this is easy to overdo. I have a ready-to-go plastic bag with the the basics for most three-season trips: Ibuprofen, several blister pads, a partial roll of KT Tape that can cover a scrape, support a tweaked knee, or protect a hot-spot, tweezers, and antibiotic ointment. I add to this kit for trips in extreme conditions or weather (salt tabs in the desert, a space blanket for winter peak bagging) but for the most part, my kit is just enough for moderate backcountry trips.

What most people don't need: a SAM splint, ACE wrap, medical scissors, multiple pads with rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide, a half-dozen allergy meds, burn gel, or a tourniquet."

8 Accessible Hikes Near Denver - thanks to 5280!

https://www.5280.com/8-accessible-hikes-near-denver/

Getting out on trails and enjoying the stress-relieving benefits of nature should be something everyone, of all abilities, can experience. Thanks to a growing number of wheelchair-accessible trails around the Denver area, it is. "There's always a way to get out if you want to and there's starting to be more and more opportunities," says Topher Downham, outreach coordinator for the City of Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parks office. "We're always trying to make trails more accessible. I think it's one of those things that we'll work on for the rest of our lives."

In 1995, at the age of 26, Downham broke his neck diving into a swimming pool and was diagnosed with quadriplegia. In 2016, he wrote and updated a trail guide to the Boulder area's most accessible trails, which is available online and at the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage. These are some of his top picks for trails around Denver and beyond that are inclusive to people of all levels of abilities.

Most Scenic

Sprague Lake Loop
Rocky Mountain National Park
Length: .5-mile loop
This flat, looped trail goes around Sprague Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. The trail's hard-packed gravel surface is suitable for wheelchairs, little kids, and those looking for a mellow stroll with stunning views. "I've seen moose there, and you've got great views of the mountains," says Downham. You'll circumnavigate the 13-acre lake and enjoy vistas of the Continental Divide and high peaks, including Notchtop Mountain, Taylor Peak, and Half Mountain. The fishing pier along the trail is a popular spot for trout fishing. There's also a wheelchair-accessible backcountry campsite located a half mile from the parking lot. Find maps and trail information here.

Best for Birdwatching

South Boulder Creek Trail
Boulder
Length: .9 miles one way
Start at the East Boulder Community Center and head toward the Bobolink trailhead on the wide, hard-packed South Boulder Creek Trail. The trailhead is named after the elusive bobolink blackbird that can occasionally be spotted along this route. This trail is rolling—with grades up to 12 percent—and the trail surface is made of crusher fines, a crushed rock that's smooth enough for wheelchair travel. "There's a creek running by and plenty of trees that provide shade," says Downham. "The hard surface is easy to roll on and has a natural feel." Find maps and trail information here.

Longest Trails

Staunton State Park
Conifer
Length: 13 miles
This panoramic Colorado state park opened in 2013 about 40 miles south of Denver, near the town of Conifer. Fridays through Sundays, from June through October, visitors with disabilities can reserve a free-of-charge motorized Trackchair, which enables access to three of Staunton State Park's accessible trails, totaling about 13 miles. (Reserve online ahead of time.) Visit the Davis fishing ponds on the 2.7-mile Davis Ponds Trail loop, ride through the forest on the 2.4-mile Mason Creek Trail, or score views of Lions Head and Pike's Peak from the 3.8-mile Staunton Ranch Trail. Find maps and trail information here.

Best Conversion of Open Space

Pella Crossing
Hygiene
Length: 2.9 miles total
Part of Boulder County's trail network, the Pella Crossing Open Space, west of Longmont, has a couple of all-accessible trails, including the 1.8-mile Braly Trail and the 1.1-mile Marlatt Trail. This former gravel mine was turned into open space in 1996 and, now, you can spot migrating birds in the wetland habitat. "You'll find three lakes here, two of which you can go around," says Downham. "The trails have a nice even grade without a lot of hills. Plus, the sunsets are phenomenal." Find maps and trail information here.

Best for Thrill Seekers

Fowler Trail
Eldorado Canyon State Park
Length: .9 miles one way
The Fowler Trail, within Eldorado Canyon State Park, traverses the edge of a cliff (safely), with stellar views of the rock climbers who flock to Eldo's legendary walls. "You're way up there," says Downham. "It's almost a little scary when you get close to the edge." You've got South Boulder Creek tumbling below and hawks soaring overhead. The first section of the wide, hard-packed trail has educational signage on flora and fauna, as well as attached binoculars to view distant birds and rock climbers. Find maps and trail information here.

Best Kept Secret

Wilderness on Wheels
Grant
Length: 1-mile boardwalk
At the base of Kenosha Pass, off Highway 285 outside the town of Grant, you'll find Wilderness on Wheels, a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk that rolls through an aspen and pine forest on the edge of the Continental Divide. The wooden boardwalk is about 8-feet wide and follows a meandering stream. You can offer a donation for the foundation that runs this trail at the trailhead. Visitors can also camp at 13 wheelchair-accessible campsites or fish in the on-site trout pond. Find maps and trail information here.

Best Urban Trail

Crown Hill Lake
Wheat Ridge
Length: .7 miles
Crown Hill Lake, a Jefferson County open space that bridges the Denver suburbs of Wheat Ridge and Lakewood, has around 3 miles of trails, but .7 miles of those are considered wheelchair accessible. Head to the park's Wildlife Sanctuary Trail for a wide, flat trail near the lake, with views of the Front Range and the Flatirons. Be on the lookout for migratory birds, too. "It's a wonderful retreat in the middle of the city," says Downham. Find maps and trail information here.

Best Mountain Trail

Sawmill Reservoir
Breckenridge
Length: 1.3-mile loop
The looped trail around Sawmill Reservoir, a 10-acre lake in Breckenridge, makes for a great high-elevation outing for nearly all ability levels. Start at Breckenridge Ski Resort's Snowflake lift and follow a creek to the reservoir. The Breckenridge Outdoor Education Center, which offers adaptive outdoor recreation camps and clinics for adults and kids, is located nearby. Find maps and trail information here.

Iran

"I learned that when comfortable elites make decisions in Washington and saber-rattle and pound their chest in air-conditioned offices on either Capitol Hill or the mall, it's young men and women that have to go somewhere in the world to do the work and get it done," Crow said.

Bonds, flight to safety, thanks to marketwatch

After Israel attacked Iran on June 13, U.S. Treasury yields rose while other countries' bond yields declined. …

Two large exchange-traded funds that invest in the government bonds of developed countries other than the U.S. are SPDR Bloomberg International Treasury Bond ETF

and iShares International Treasury Bond ETF . The BWX ETF has gained 9.3% and IGOV is up 10.0% so far this year, versus a gain of 3.6% for iShares 7-10 Year Treasury Bond ETF . The ETFs have an effective duration of between seven and eight years, comparable to that of the U.S. 10-year Treasury.

The takeaway here is the need to diversify fixed-income investments that you hold as a hedge against geopolitical crises. You can no longer assume that U.S. Treasurys will be the prime beneficiary of a flight to safety.

Protest advice, Florida oppressive actions against protestors, death, vehicular homicide

Protest signs and sunscreen are just the beginning. Experts at Physicians for Human Rights suggest bringing the following:

  • Backpack or string bag: You won't want anything bulky and you'll want your hands free.
  • Face mask or bandanna, hat and sunglasses: Useful for helping to shield your eyes from pepper spray or tear gas, can also protect you from identification by law enforcement or online doxxing if that's a concern.
  • Water: Stay hydrated. Bring as big a bottle as you can, with a squirt top in case you need to quickly wash off your skin or eyes.
  • Glasses: Avoid wearing contact lenses, which can trap irritating chemicals. If you must wear contacts, wear shatter-resistant goggles with a tight seal. Avoid wearing makeup.
  • Comfortable clothes, closed shoes:Pick neutral colors without obvious slogans or easily identifiable markings. Consider bringing a spare change of clothes in case what you're wearing gets sprayed.
  • Identification, contact information: Make sure you can identify yourself (and your citizen status). Write your emergency contact info on your skin. If you have a lawyer, write that number, too.
  • A few days of any vital medication:Ideally, they should be in a labeled prescription bottle.
  • Cash: In case you need bail.
  • Snacks: High energy, high protein munchies are preferred.
In the days before millions of Americans are expected to take to the streets to protest President Donald Trump, Florida officials warned protesters.

Be a prepper…

I think it's a good idea to make sure you have enough of the things that really matter to you a lot to last maybe 3 months. For me that is medication, really important supplements, small essential gadgets, and some food that keeps well. Also, just things you think will be inconvenient if other people panic buy them, even though they're really made in the US anyway. I'm not saying that it will matter, but I prefer to reduce uncertainty…

If you are employed or seeking work, well, it's always a good idea to know who your references will be, and keep your skills and resume up to date.

democracy and authoritarianism, credit to Michael Otto

This is from a history teacher, Michael Otto:

'I teach both American and international government. For years, I've been going over "case study" states, from mostly democratic (UK) to democratizing-but-corrupt (Mexico, Nigeria) to illiberal-authoritarian (Russia) to theocratic (Iran) to traditional authoritarian (China).

When it comes to the difference between democracy and authoritarianism, one thing Americans need to understand is that there's never one single moment where you become an authoritarian state; no leader will stand up and announce, "I am now a dictator."

Putin is the classic case study for gradual, effective subversion of democracy. Russia had been democratizing for about a decade when he took over in 2000, and now -even though Russia ostensibly still has the appearance of democracy: elections, separation of powers, federalism, and a constitution- none of that matters: Putin is in absolute control. And Putin is, coincidentally (?), the authoritarian most vocally admired by Donald Trump.

But how screwed are we? Well, as any first-year political science student can assert, there are ways -very simple, clear-cut, definitive ways- to tell when your democracy is in danger. Let's go over them, shall we?

1. You know you're drifting towards authoritarianism when...Your Legislative Branch cedes power to your President.

Montesquieu (and later Madison) envisioned the Legislative Branch as the primary work horse of government: It was made -in part- to check the President's excesses. It has far more powers than the President, it's more representative of the people than the President, and it was specifically given the abilities to restrain, overrule, or remove the President. In all of U.S. history, the legislature was never intended to be subservient to executive power. When a President's rule sidesteps legislative functions, and the Congress allows it, the balance of power is subverted.

For the record, Putin's rise initially faced resistance from his own legislative Duma -serving their constitutional function- until he cowed them, forcing out resistors and intimidating dissent, eventually rewriting the rules as to how they were elected to install loyalists exclusively.

Ask yourself: Has the U.S. Congress been ceding power to President Trump, diminishing in importance as the president's role grows?

2. You know you're drifting towards authoritarianism when...Corporatism becomes normalized. Corporatism is a political system whereby for-profit business groups (i.e. mass media and energy) become the most impactful partners in the government's policymaking process.

Authoritarians need industry leaders (and more importantly, their money) in order to spread their influence. Consequently, deals are made and favors traded (tax cuts in exchange for favorable reporting, for instance) that further enhance the power of the oligarchs and President over that of the people.

For the record, Putin allowed profiteering for oligarchs who would help him (the Rotenburgs: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-55872249 and Yuri Kovalchuk: https://www.forbes.com/profile/yuri-kovalchuk/?sh=39c42ed51aae
) and persecuted or jailed those who opposed him (Mikhail Borisovich Khodorkovsky).

Ask yourself: Has President Trump empowered corporations who aided him and diminished those who opposed him in order to gain more power?

3. You know you're drifting towards authoritarianism when...You begin to wonder if your President will obey the Constitution.

Rule of law is considered one of the four pillars of democracy, and the U.S. -despite its foibles- has a strong tradition of adherence to this concept. For many countries, the Constitution is just a piece of paper, altered on the fly when it suits the regime (example: every Chinese president before Xi Xinping had term limits; now -with a wave of the pen- he does not). If obeying the U.S. Constitution becomes a question rather than an expectation, that is not in the American tradition of democracy.

For the record, Putin regularly violates the civil liberties present within the Russian constitution: restricting protests, intimidating (or outright murdering journalists), and jailing political opponents.

Ask yourself: Have President Trump's actions ever threatened constitutional norms or the rule of law in pursuit of personal gain?

4. You know you're drifting towards authoritarianism when...Your President creates enemies for you to turn on, both internally and externally.

This is pretty much textbook fascism, frankly, but I'm shocked at how easily it's getting overlooked. Look, one cannot be a hero without a villain, and who is more easily vanquished than the vulnerable? If you can turn your citizenry onto a witch hunt against its own people, then that is a useful tool for power grabs in the name of "security." And if you can turn them against a foreign adversary, then that's even better: nothing promotes nationalism like warfare...especially easily won warfare.

For the record, in addition to turning the Russian population against their own state of Chechnya, Putin has demonized the LGBT population, recently making even symbolic support of them criminal ( https://www.hrw.org/news/2024/02/15/russia-first-convictions-under-lgbt-extremist-ruling ). And of course, there was always the expectation of an easy win against Ukraine, especially after the world just let them seize Crimea in 2014.

Ask yourself: Has President Trump encouraged us to turn on any of our fellow Americans...or created any new foreign enemies out of historic allies?

5. You know you're drifting towards authoritarianism when...Your President elevates loyalty to himself personally over that of the country as the most desirable characteristic of government agents and military personnel.

Consider: Though most cabinet members are rotated out when a new president enters, the vast majority of bureaucrats and soldiers (everyone from staff sergeants to park rangers) stay in place, keeping the machinery of government running, as their oath is to the Constitution, not a specific human being. Authoritarians see that as insufficient, replacing elements of the bureaucracy -especially military and law enforcement- who will criticize implementation -or refuse illegal execution- of presidential will.

For the record, one of Putin's first actions when becoming President was to put the FSB (their version of the FBI) under the direct control of the President (himself). Prior to that, there had been the detachment between law enforcement and political power expected and traditional to western democracies. From May 17, 2000 onward, they became a tool of his will, incrementally expanded in power and wielded against his enemies ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Security_Service ).

Ask yourself: Has President Trump appointed government agents -especially military and law enforcement agents- that have vocalized loyalty to him personally, as well as advocated for vengeance against his political enemies?

Sigh. I'm tired, but I could go on and on. There's a phrase that's been paraded lately: "Democracy dies in darkness." In my experience, that's not necessarily what's happening here. Despite the backslide in democratic qualities we're experiencing lately, the one we have in spades is transparency: Thanks to a vibrant media empire -as well as Trump's narcissistic self-promotion- we are constantly aware of the moves he is making to subvert the norms of our regime.

That said, as democracy dies in America, it won't be in darkness. It will be within our sight and with our permission.'
